Recycling Books into Art

The Monroe Public Library recently unveiled a new piece of artwork created by local artist Suzanne Miller.  The artwork was constructed entirely from books that were part of a 2011 Library project to clear the shelves of thousands of books that had not been checked out in decades, as well as outdated and worn books.

Library Director, Suzann Holland, wanted to commission a piece of artwork that would allow the books to live on and to commemorate the long hours library staff dedicated to this project.  The artwork, titled “Writing the Next Chapter”, contains photos, illustrations, and entire books as part of the sculpture.  The names of all of the staff members that played a role in the project are also incorporated into the piece.

Suzanne Miller, who also created the mural in the Children’s Room of the library said, “It was a little disconcerting to cut apart these beautiful old books so I had to convince myself that most had not been seen by anyone in many, many years. Through this piece of art, people can experience the enjoyment and knowledge that these books contained. Their beauty will live on.”

“Writing the Next Chapter” is currently on display in the Library entrance.  The public is invited to stop and view the art during regular library hours.
