Central Staircase & Atrium

For many, the wide, bright staircase is a hallmark of the Monroe Public Library.

Currently, the staircase has open railings and space underneath that allow children to climb, slide, hide, drop items, and do other potentially dangerous things.  In addition, the open railings and two platforms are not compliant with current ADA regulations.

The proposed changes will create a new, beautiful staircase that is still the same width and still looks up to the second floor, while addressing the issues that make the current staircase unsafe and inaccessible.

IMPACT
  • A new staircase will improve safety and accessibility, while still acting as a centerpiece of the library.
  • The space gained from changing the staircase makes possible all of the renovations to the second floor.
