Award-Winning Fiction

8/19/2020

Laura here: I was recently asked about how to find award winners among the books in our adult Fiction collection. Here is a selection of books we own that are winners of some of the more high-profile prizes. Remember, there are many more awards than listed here, and most fiction genres have one or more awards of their own. Additionally, while over time, these prizes have become more diverse by awarding women and people of color, there is still a ways to go.

Continue reading for selections from among winners of: the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the National Book Award for Fiction, the Booker Prize, and the Women's Prize for Fiction.

A note from Laura: Graphic Memoirs are like graphic novels—illustrated stories—but tell a story from the author and/or illustrator's life. Comics are inherently a collaborative art, as different people may write, draw, color, and letter the story. Many graphic memoirs are written by those who do it all, but others tell someone's true story with assistance from other creative people. In our library, Graphic Memoirs are shelved with Graphic Novels. I have left off this list some of the "bigger names" or "classics" in Graphic Memoir, such as Alison Bechdel, Roz Chast, Lucy Knisley, John Lewis' March, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, and David Small's Stitches. I hope this list helps you discover new voices!
